Smiles On Us Free Dental Care Event Returns in June 2023

Since its inception in 2012, Georgian Dental has been proud to bring the annual ‘Smiles On Us’ event to the Barrie community and provide no-cost dental care services to those in need. This exciting initiative is coming back once again in 2023 thanks to the efforts of the team here at Georgian Dental, as well as eager volunteers from the community, and the generous sponsorship of local businesses.

The health of your teeth has a big effect on your general well-being, so it’s important to take advantage of every opportunity available to improve your dental health. For those individuals without adequate dental benefits from their employer or who do not currently have their own private dental insurance plan, this can be a significant challenge. Here at Georgian Dental, we firmly believe that everyone should be able to obtain the essential dental care they need to keep their smiles healthy, so we took the initiative to develop a non-profit campaign to deliver free dental health services to our local community. Thus, the Smiles On Us event was brought to life!

The first Smiles On Us event took place in 2012, and since then has provided no-charge dental care services to more than 320 people in the local area! For many patients, this is a life-changing opportunity to improve the state of their dental health and overall well-being. In fact, having a healthy mouth is an integral part of keeping your entire body healthy. Strong teeth allow you to eat a healthy diet rich in nutrients, and a great-looking smile gives you more self-confidence in your daily life. Proper dental care also helps to ward off oral health issues that can lead to long-term problems down the road, such as gum disease and oral cancer.

This year, the event takes place on Saturday June 24^th, starting promptly at 8am and running until 2pm. In the past, we’ve had a spectacular turn out for Smiles On Us events, so we encourage people in need of free dental services to arrive early to secure their spot in line. It’s certainly an exciting day, and we do our best to see as many patients as we can during the time of the event.

Our Barrie dental clinic will be the home for Smiles On Us this year, with all hands on deck to serve as many patients as possible! If you’ve never been to our Barrie clinic, just look for the beautiful white house on the southeast corner of Bayfield and Wellington. It’s pretty easy to find!

What Kinds of Dental Services Can the Community Get?

In order to provide the most people with dental care during the event, services will be focused around four essential areas that are important to the general health of patients.

• Dental Hygiene Treatments – Patients will be able to have a general dental hygiene treatment performed, which includes a thorough tooth cleaning, scaling, and polishing. The objective here is to remove bacteria, plaque, and tartar from the teeth and gums, and scrub away surface stains to rejuvenate the teeth and improve the overall health of the mouth.
• Dental Diagnostic X-Rays – To identify hidden oral health problems and evaluate the state of the teeth and jaw, patients can receive a complimentary x-ray and diagnosis. X-rays provide the dentist with a complete view of the teeth, jawbone, and surrounding areas of the mouth.
• Simple Cavity Filling – If tooth decay has occurred in a tooth, patients can receive a complimentary cavity filling during the Smiles On Us event. At Georgian Dental, we only use Mercury-free dental amalgam fillings for optimum results and the greatest health benefits.
• Tooth Extractions – If a tooth has become damaged or decayed to the point where it cannot be repaired, it is likely that it will need to be extracted to avoid further health problems in the future. Patients can obtain a simple tooth extraction during Smiles On Us.

In the event that patients are in need of other services not covered by this list, recommendations can be provided and appointments can be made to obtain detailed information at a later date. Who Is Eligible to Receive Free Dental Care at Smiles On Us?

This event is open to anyone 18 years and older, and all you need to do is show up! Like we mentioned earlier, it’s wise to arrive as early as possible to secure your spot. You don’t need to have dental insurance or corporate benefits to cover basic dental health care services during Smiles On Us, because there are no costs to cover!

For patients 17 years old or younger, the Healthy Smiles Ontario program is available in order to obtain free basic dental care services. In partnership with the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, Georgian Dental is proud to offer dental services through the Healthy Smiles Ontario program all year long.

What Else Should People Know Before They Arrive?

Here are a few more key points that you should familiarize yourself with before the big day of Smiles On Us arrives!

• The event runs rain or shine, so when planning your visit it’s a good idea to check the weather and dress accordingly. Depending on the forecast, plan to bring an umbrella, sunscreen, or other items that you may want to have on-hand while you wait.
• Parking at the clinic is limited, but there are many options for public parking nearby in the downtown Barrie area. We recommend you check the City of Barrie website parking reference to find alternate locations to park if you will be driving to the even.
• Simply due to the limitation of time, we may not be able to see everyone who arrives. However, we can offer information on obtaining dental care through government-funded programs, as well as financing options to help manage the costs of certain dental services.
