We’re at an unusual point in time whereupon COVID19 psychological fatigue is balanced with reaching a sense of routine with the province wide lockdown. According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Premier Doug Ford will be announcing early next week, plans on reopening the province’s economy, as Saskatchewan takes the lead and plans to reopen its economy after 1 week in May 2020. This could be good news!
However, According to the Government of Canada, the “number of illnesses in Canada is continuing to increase and has not yet peaked.” Further, the recent spike in cases in mid-April 2020 is a significant concern but appears not to the point of delaying the reopening the economy. According to BC Provincial health officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry’s report on April 25th 2020, part of the reason for the dramatic spike in cases is the use of additional testing related to outbreaks at a federal prison and a poultry processing plant in BC. In other words, it’s an isolated outbreak and “we go this!”

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said earlier this week “The reality is, it is going to be weeks still. We recognize that it is going to be important to get our economy going and that we will have to do it in phases. We will have to remain vigilant until such a point as a vaccine against COVID-19 is found.” On this point, some experts suggest 12-18 months before a successful vaccine is found. Those are opinions based on older drug development models and human trials. However, there are companies that are utilizing the database of known drugs that already on the market to test effectiveness against the replication of COVID19. So far, over 30 drugs have been identified by the Scientists at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, the University of Hong Kong, Scripps Research, UC San Diego School of Medicine and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and UCLA. Additionally, Pharmacology Corporations developing drugs already in human testing trials, are stockpiling vaccines that are the most anticipated to be successful ahead of human trials completion. Due to the vast funding and research occurring globally, the time to a successful vaccine will be dramatically shortened.
When exactly will COVID19 end?
There are many prediction models that seem to be predicting an end date of May 2020 to June 2020. The prediction models from Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) calls for an end date of COVID19 in Canada for May 17, 2020 with 97% confidence. Their models predict a similar end globally on May 29th 2020, reaching 100% confidence for December 08, 2020.
A short story of the Stockdale Paradox
In Spite of these predictions, I want to tell you about Stockdale Paradox, named after Admiral Jim Stockdale (Good to Great, Jim Collins 2002). Admiral Stockdale was the highest-ranking prisoner of war (POW) at the “Hanoi Hilton” POW camp during the height of Vietnam War. He was tortured over 20 times during his 8-year imprisonment (1965 to 1973). Admiral Stockdale lived out his imprisonment during the war with crushing uncertainty, never knowing when, or if, he would ever live through the torture. That’s a very bleak and depressing reality, but when interviewed about his experience, Jim Stockdale recounts that he never lost faith in the end of the story and the imprisonment and torture would become a defining experience for him. Admiral Stockdale reported that the POWs that did not make it out of the imprisonment were the optimist.
The optimists were the ones who would latch on to a specific date they believed would be the time of their release. Repeatedly, those dates came and went without freedom. Eventually those POWs eventually lost hope and died.
The important lesson from Admiral Stockdale is this:
“You must never confuse faith that you will prevail in the end—which you can never afford to lose—with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be.”
Admiral Stockdale’s message is to embrace your reality and “Deal with it!” That is very tough military love, but that perspective helped him survive and then thrive after the POW imprisonment. After returning home to the USA in 1973, Admiral Stockdate then went on to run as an independent presidential candidate in 1992 with running mate Ross Perot. Jim Stockdale recently passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease after his retirement in California.
I hope to see you again soon as we’re “dealing with it” and will be prepared for the new rules and regulations as the we return to the new ‘freedom’.

We have a “shields up” strategy that we employ whenever a pandemic surge is predicted by the WHO that affects Canada. Our unique Sanitization Quality Assurance Directive (SQuAD™) protocols include increased frequency of sanitation cycles especially in high traffic areas and disinfectant ‘Fogging’ treatment in common areas. Our patients love our SQuAD™ protocols which introduced the use of Zero Waiting Room Syndrome™ Protocols to promote physical distancing in dental clinic. Our experience with SARS, H1N1, MERS, ZIKA, Swine Flu, Bird flu, Ebola has prepared us with protocols that we continue to implement to this day, including daily Ozone flooding of the clinic airspace and single use, surgical booties or sanitized closed cell foam patient footwear.
We are here for you. Remember to stay healthy, keep safe and we’ll see you soon.
